Last night, Múinteoir Síle and some of her pupils made a presentation on Kahoot in the Classroom at a teachmeet in the Mayo Education Centre.  The presentation described how we use kahoot in the classroom, both as an assessment and learning tool.  It informed educators on how effective it can be in a multi-grade setting and how it encourages independent learning and peer assessment.  The pupils invited the seminar participants to partake in an interactive general knowledge quiz which brought fun and excitement to the teachmeet. In a one teacher school, we all learn together; we support each others learning and we learn from one another.

“I always say that there’s no better way of knowing if the teaching method you’re using is beneficial other than to experience the reception and results from the pupils themselves. The enjoyment I got today watching the pupils take part in spelling and vocabulary activities using spellingcity.com This is an on-line learning and gaming platform to help pupils practice and learn spellings and vocabulary. The teacher or pupil can create a spelling list of choice and then the app or on-line platform generates activities like sentence builder, paragraph builder, spelling games, test me and teach me activities all relating to that spelling list. After all the activities are complete, the spelling and vocabulary tests are carried out and pupils receive their results immediately and they are printed off for their assessment folder. With the help of pupils, I created the standardised SWST (Single Word Spelling Test) spelling lists, level 1-7 and published them in our school’s Spelling City account.  I assign pupils their spelling list activities and set a date for submission and off they go. It was overwhelming to see the improved attitude towards spelling and vocabulary work. All pupils were meeting early deadlines and requesting new assignments.”

Congratulations to our pupils on achieving 2nd place in Cup 3 of LearnStorm Ireland 2016. The pupils’ hard work and dedication both in and out of school has paid off. The pupils also came second place in Cup 2 of the Mastery Challenge (points per eligible pupil) this year.   The challenge is available for pupils from 4th class right through to Leaving Cert level. Our pupils Emma Kelly and Alisha Finnerty have been invited to a national awards ceremony at Dublin Castle for their efforts and achievements in the Learnstorm Maths challenge. The awards ceremony will take place on May 21st 2016. Congratulations to the girls, we’re extremely proud of your achievements.

Our Proclamation For a New Generation 2016

This year, Múinteoir Síle and the pupils dressed up as their favourite book characters to celebrate World Book Day 2016. Some characters included Nanny McPhee, Doc McStuffins, Grandpa from Grandpa’s Great Escape, Where’s Wally, Alice in Wonderland, Goldilocks and more…..a real mix of traditional and modern authors. Regardless of what character they chose, the main idea being that every pupil came to embrace and appreciate the art of being an author and took the opportunity to read an excerpt from their favourite title. We listened to some interactive Dr.Seuss stories online. The children learned more about various children’s authors and we even tweeted some of them to let them know how much we appreciated their work.   Thank you to Sarah Lean for her kind words and acknowledgement of our work. 

The pupils investigated the effects that worms have on vegetative growth.  They presented their discoveries and findings at the 2016 Primary Science Fair.

Afterwards the pupils invited the local people in the area into the school to showcase their work and present their findings.

We were very fortunate to recently have been invited to Cloghans Hill N.S. to join them in partaking in BizWorld Ireland. This is a programme put on by Bank of Ireland for primary schools.  The programme aims to give pupils an insight into the steps involved in becoming a director of a company team and understanding the world of business.  The children were required to work hard on their communication, negotiation and entrepreneurial skills while learning their strengths and ambitions.  One of our teams came up with the idea of ‘Eye scanned it’ – a device that would enable blind people identify objects in their environment.  Another team invented the idea of a lunch box that would keep a lunch warm or cold depending on the preference.  All pupils were required to present their ideas at the dragon’s den.
